I’ve been blogging a bit, just not here! Look for my legal research-focused posting at WNE Spot-On Legal Research. Vacation-themed posts will remain on hibbler.info.
More vacation
January 5, 2012Vacation
August 8, 2011Well that was a nice, long vacation, but it is back to work to get ready for the new semester – early orientation is days away. This is not the right venue for vacation pictures, but….
Ping!
July 7, 2011Is that how you pronounce the suffix “.png” on a image file? I’m not sure. Anyway, I was surprised to learn how much metadata could be included with one.
I knew that digital pictures “included” information about the camera and settings used to take the picture, but being just a cell phone photographer, I had not given much thought as to how.
It turns out that the Extensible Metadata Platform (XMP) is how. My real “aha!” moment came when I was playing around with this feature in Adobe Photoshop recently, and saw that there were fields specifically for putting copyright and licensing information right into the file! This really simplifies using CC images, particularly icons, on a mobile web site. It also makes it easier to put that type of information on pictures in a website when a content management system may not give you enough flexibility to put in all of the licensing information you would want to.
XMP works with .jpg, .pdf, .png files and more. How have you been using XMP to include metadata in files?
I’m back
June 18, 2011After some time away, working and posting over at the RIPS Law Librarian blog, I am back over here. I even switched web hosting, again – it is hard to find a good one at a good price! I will still post there from time to time, but I will be transitioning over here, as a new crop of bloggers arrive on the RIPS scene later this summer. It’s good to be back!
Where am I?
December 4, 2010Want to know how to kill a blog? Move it, change its RSS feed, and then stop posting! I will occasionally be posting at the RIPS Law Librarian blog, and a bit on Twitter, but other than that, expect this space to be a little sparse through the end of the year. After that…well, Ive got some plans. Secret plans.
1-800-GOOG-BYE
October 10, 2010Google is shutting down its free voice-operated directory service, 1-800-GOOG-411. They got what they wanted out of it – tons of voice samples asking for specific businesses. In fact, Google mentions how it has enabled new services, specifically on smart phones. I wonder what free Google service is next on the chopping block? If I were a Google service that didn’t offer up ads, I would be worried!
Patent Question
September 27, 2010I was browsing the Patent Office database the other day, and saw an interesting one, # 7,213,261, titled “Interactive virtual library system for expeditiously providing user-desired information from content providers, at least one of which is commercial, to a user without the need for the user to access the content providers individually .” To me, this sounded a whole lot like what Summon and other OPACs are doing with the ability to search for articles and books at the same time. Thoughts? I wouldn’t violate it – the patent belongs to a giant international law firm!
Constitution Day
September 12, 2010I’d like to remind everyone that Friday is Constitution Day! Celebrate by telling all of your friends to download Constitution Alive! Oh, and reflect on the Constitution too, I guess….
Android for a day
August 21, 2010I was all ready to make the move to Android – really! Then after ordering and waiting for my htc incredible, it turned out my house was in a bad verizon reception zone! So back to AT&T. Unfortunately, their top-of-the-line android phone has a severe GPS problem. So it was back to the iPhone! A couple of observations from the experience:
1. Android looks like an OS I would like – there is a lot of room for tinkering. I’ve never been inclined to jailbreak my iPhone, but I would have given rooting a try.
2. Apple still blows Verizon and AT&T away in terms of the face to face shopping experience.
3. The USA needs a single cell phone standard – this GSM vs. CDMA divide is not pro-consumer.
